The rivalry between Bloody Knife and Gall spanned 3 decades. Both killed members of the others family. It is a wild tale and one most have never heard.
Gall was a muscular Lakota man who lost his parents at a young age and ended up being raised by Sitting Bull, the overall Chief of the Lakota and part of the Hunkpapa band. Gall himself led one of the Hunkpapa bands and was at times the most hated member of the tribe by the US Soldiers and the Arikara whom Gall constantly terrorized. Gall was a stone-cold killer and complete bad ass.
Bloody Knife was half Hunkpapa and half Arikara. His father was Hunkpapa, and his mother was Arikara. Bloody Knife was bullied his entire childhood by Gall to the point that his mother left with him and moved back in with the Arikara while Bloody Knife was still a boy. Bloody Knife returned to his father’s camp when he was a late teen thinking he would be welcome. Instead, he was seized by Gall and others who stripped him naked and beat him with coup sticks until he bled all over. They mocked his pain and told him he would be killed if he ever showed up again.
Bloody Knife was now on the war path to get revenge on Gall. He became a scout for the US Army and tracked the movements of the Lakota. General Custer said Bloody Knife was his best scout and his favorite. Bloody Knife could also speak Lakota and Arikara so he was used as an interpreter as well.
