Little Big Horn
269 US soldiers and 6 of their Cro and Arikara allies were killed and another 50 were wounded at the battle of Little Big Horn. Custer and his 5 companies lost all 210 men killed. Reno together with Benteen had 6 companies and had 53 killed and 55 wounded of which 6 more died of wounds days later. The Lakota and Chyenne forces lost 31 warriors and 10 women and children killed along with about 160 total wounded. The forces with Custer only killed 13 and wounded around 30. Custer’s 5 companies were simply swarmed, and many killed themselves rather than face a slow death.
Custer only had about 500 people in his entire force and was up against 1,100 warriors who had just been fired on without warning and lost wives and children to the merciless slaughter Custer and Reno unleashed on them to start the fight.
It was the last of the three armies sent to crush Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull of the Lakota and Two Moons of the Chyenne. The other two armies had been thwarted but not defeated. This time it was a lopsided defeat. The famed Kit Carson who fought in the Civil War and later against just about every tribe in the west said the two tribes he feared the most were the Lakota, specifically the Black feet of Montana and of course the Comanche in northern Texas. Carson fought the Utes, the Apache, the Navajo, the Comanche, the Kiowa and even tribes typically thought of as allies like the Arikara and Cro. Red Clouds war and the victories of Rosebud and Little Big Horn 7 years later rival the Comanche in resistance to being forced onto a reservation. The Comanche are the only to never sign a treaty with the US.
I forgot to add the story of Isaiah Dorman who was the only African-American at the battle. He was part of the 7th Cavalry although oddly he's listed as an Indian Scout by Reno in a report after the battle. He was wounded and the Lakota we're going to cut him to pieces but Sitting Bull spared him because Isaiah had been married to a hunkpapa woman. He begged for them to just let him die but a woman walked up who had just lost a 10 year old and asked if you didn't want to do this why did you ride with them and why did you attack us? She then shot him in the head with a pistol and cut his balls off.
